About AudioBalance
Last updated:
AudioBalance is a Windows app that evens out the volume of your PC automatically. It is built by Jeremy Heindrichs in Bütgenbach, Belgium. This page says what it does, how it works and where its limits are.
What is AudioBalance?
AudioBalance sits between Windows audio and your speakers or headphones. It keeps measuring loudness and adjusts, so quiet dialogue stays audible and loud parts do not suddenly get too loud. That applies to everything that plays through the Windows default output: browsers, streaming, games and music. The app runs on Windows 10 and 11 and is available in German and English.
What AudioBalance does
- Evens out the volume: Auto Level turns loud parts down and gently lifts very quiet ones, Limit Only only ever turns down. More on that: Normalize volume on Windows.
- Modes: Light, Normal or Strong set how tightly and how fast it regulates.
- Detects the content: custom AI models detect film, games, music and speech and adapt the regulation.
- Output device: automatic or fixed, whether speakers, headphones, Bluetooth, a USB headset or a TV.
- Keep this volume: one click or Ctrl+Alt+L measures the app that is playing. If its own slider is turned down, AudioBalance then regulates it as if it were at 100%.
- No driver option needed: AudioBalance does not need your driver's Loudness Equalization. Why that is often missing: Loudness Equalization on Windows 11.
Who makes AudioBalance
AudioBalance is made by Jeremy Heindrichs from Bütgenbach in Belgium. He develops the app independently and sells it himself as a sole trader.
He also makes TranscriptBalance, a free web app that turns audio into text in the browser and transcribes lectures live. Address, company number and email are in the legal notice.
Principles
- Your audio stays on your PC. Measurement, regulation and AI run locally. Audio is never uploaded.
- Statistics only with consent. Anonymous usage statistics reach us only if you explicitly agree.
What the app still sends over the internet, such as the update check or later the license check, and what it does not, is described in the privacy policy.
The technology in brief
- Audio path: apps play to the virtual device VB-CABLE. AudioBalance picks up the sound there, processes it and outputs it to your real device through WASAPI. AudioBalance does not install a kernel driver of its own.
- Measurement: loudness to ITU-R BS.1770-4.
- Regulation: one gain for the combined sound, plus a limiter.
- Content detection: custom AI models trained for volume regulation, running on your PC.
Where AudioBalance has limits
- One level for all apps together: AudioBalance regulates the combined sound of all apps, not each app on its own.
- Voice chat is not regulated: AudioBalance deliberately does not regulate voice chat such as Discord. Your teammates stay as loud as you set them.
- Exclusive mode and fixed devices: Programs that use exclusive audio mode or pick an output device themselves bypass AudioBalance.
- About 0.2 seconds of delay: That is how much later the sound arrives. Bluetooth headphones add their own delay.
- Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit: Installing needs administrator rights.
The quickest way to find out how well AudioBalance suits you is your next film or game.
